After New York and London, Anna Wintour chose Paris to host the 2024 edition of Vogue World, marking an exceptional tribute to 120 years of fashion and its indelible link to sport. This prestigious event took place on June 23rd, just before the start of Haute Couture Week and the Olympics, making Paris the focal point of the global fashion scene for one magical night.
Following intense negotiations with numerous influential figures, from President Emmanuel Macron to Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, Bruno Pavlovsky (Executive President of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode), and the leaders of LVMH, Anna Wintour achieved the remarkable feat of privatizing the famed Place Vendôme. Surrounded by prestigious haute couture workshops, this iconic Parisian square provided the perfect backdrop for an event of such magnitude.
In addition to this exceptional venue, Anna Wintour surrounded herself with extraordinarily talented individuals for this edition. Ibrahim Kamara, Editor-in-Chief of Dazed magazine and Artistic Director of Off-White, oversaw the event's styling, while Sam Wrench, the director of The Eras Tour by Taylor Swift, captured the essence of the evening. Parris Goebel, renowned for her choreography of Rihanna’s 2022 Super Bowl show, directed the staging. Cara Delevingne, the famous model and actress, hosted the evening with flair.
The stage was illuminated by dazzling performances from Aya Nakamura and Bad Bunny. Aya Nakamura captivated the audience in an elegant black Balmain dress adorned with sparkling crystals. Bad Bunny, on the other hand, opted for an avant-garde look with an oversized purple velvet suit by Louis Vuitton.
The event naturally attracted the crème de la crème of the fashion world and influential personalities. Gigi Hadid was spotted in an Alexandre Vauthier creation, Pharrell Williams in a Chanel ensemble, and Isabelle Huppert in a Dior gown. Each guest brought their personal touch to the evening, reflecting the diversity and elegance of fashion.
The show was designed in collaboration with youth sports academies from across France, combining various sports such as cycling, gymnastics, tennis, fencing, and breakdancing with each decade of French fashion since the 1920s. The creations highlighted numerous contemporary and historical French designers. Notably, the house of Lanvin presented an impressive dress adorned with stars on a base of scarves and muslin for a delicate and elegant drape. Appearing in the 1920s decade of the Parisian show, the creation was inspired by the “vogue” swimsuit made by Jeanne Lanvin in 1924.
How could the ties between fashion, sport, and the city of Paris be celebrated without mentioning the iconic waiters' race? Fifteen waiters, dressed in personalized bibs representing famous institutions such as Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots, opened the procession at Place Vendôme. This two-kilometer race saw participants compete to keep a glass of water, a coffee, and a croissant intact on their trays while being the fastest.
Once again, Anna Wintour has transported us into a world of dreams and elegance. Her visionary approach seamlessly blended the realms of fashion and sport, making Vogue World 2024 an unforgettable event.
